| Sommocolonia lies 5 km
from Barga town, off the Ponte de Catagnana.Barga itself
is 1hr 15 m from Pisa airport via the stunning city of
Lucca, and lies between here and the regional capital of
Northern Tuscany, Castelneuvo di Garfagnana. On it's doorstep
lie a number of protected parks famed nationally for their
wildlife, superb walking holidays and sporting pastimes. |

Centrally located, 1 hours drive west takes
you to the beaches of the Ligurian Sea in the summer, whilst
a similar journey North in the winter delivers you to the
slopes of Abetone on the Appenine Ridge. Both Florence and
Sienna are easy day trips by motorway or train. Please note
a car will be necessary.
More locally, the town of Barga is simply
steeped in culture and the Arts. Barga Vecchia (the old town)
,with it's ancient walls and gates,is peppered with cafes, artists
studios and galleries. The 16th Century Theatre boasts a full
programme of national and international performances. There
are famous Jazz and Opera Festivals annually and many festas
and impromptu concerts al fresco. The 10th Century Lombardy
Romanesque Duomo, is similarly famous for its carvings and
gloriously crowns the old town.
Juxtaposed at the bottom of the hill, Barga
Giardino, with it's supermarket, banks, alimentari and bars
provides modern services and Saturday morning market. Here
the main focal point of the community in the summer months,
Barga swimming pool, is surely the most exquisitely positioned
facility with it's open views to the Apuan Alps.
